JANELLE AFRICA  BS CRIMINOLOGY – Araullo University

Not everyone has the luxury to go to school. That’s what Janelle Africa knew ever since he stopped studying for more than 6 years.

Janelle Africa is a third-year Criminology student at PHINMA Araullo University. As someone who came from a family that’s not financially stable, studying in a university will always be costly for him. That reality hindered Janelle and forced him to go out of school to work double jobs.

In daylight, he serves as caregiver to his grandfather. At night, he works at a gym fitness center as an instructor. For six years, Janelle was the breadwinner of his family and had been working two jobs to sustain their needs. Admittedly saying, going back to school is the last thing that Janelle had in mind. That changed when he met and coached a faculty member from AU at the gym center, who encouraged him to go back in school.

“Sir Eldon po kasi is nagtatrabaho pala sa Araullo University, sa PHINMA. So nag-offer po siya sa’kin kung gusto ko daw po bang bumalik ulit mag-aral kasi mayroon daw ino-offer na GAS focus on Criminology.”

Janelle Africa is one of the many qualifiers for HK Scholarship where he’s able to continue his studies through tuition fee discounts. But as life circumstances happen, he almost left school for good as their family struggled a lot. Janelle said it’s his faith and answered prayers that kept him to stay in the school.

For the last time of trying his luck, he applied as a student assistant at AU’s CSDL office and fortunately passed the test. He’s now an active working student in the university and is about to fulfill his dream— to graduate and become a police officer.
